miles here. i’m interested in the interesting and like to curate this semi-weekly newsletter for my friends and anyone else who wants to tune in.
🎧 what i’m listening to
Bitter with the Sweet - Vol. II. This playlist is the second collection of peaceful and melancholy tunes that transports me to comfortable, nostalgic landscapes. Like the last collection, look out for some beautiful covers like José González’s Stay Alive and songs with vocals so beautiful they belie the imagination like Rhye’s Song for You. And suppose you made it to the second film in Linklater’s Before Trilogy, you may recognize Julie Delpy’s A Waltz for a Night, a homage to that first magical evening in Vienna when Hawke and Delpy first collided.
🎬 what i’m watching
The Queen’s Gambit. Ok ok, I know, it seems the whole world is watching or has watched this Netflix Original Series, but if you’re holding out, I’m here to tell you it’s worth the hype. The movie somehow simultaneously hits like an epic sports drama and fashionista’s/interior designer’s wet dream, each episode building towards the largest of world stages in 1960s Moscow against ever more beautiful cinematography. The cast is chock-full of amazingly colorful and specific characters who transport you to a rarely portrayed snippet of 1960s culture that isn’t a rehashing of the hippy counterculture movement. It’s also delightfully dark and raw at times and had me cringing at the edgy alcohol and drug scenes. Not to be missed.
🤔 quote i’m pondering
“Perhaps the best conversationalist in the world is the man who helps others to talk.” - East of Eden, John Steinbeck
