Miles' Notes, February 2
HI. I hope you're having a nice weekend.
Miles here.
I've wanted to commit to writing and curating for my community for a long time. At the behest of close friends, I'm finally going for it.
This is an experiment, and the idea is simple. I'll be keeping you up to date on my musings, what I'm reading, what I'm listening to, who I'm meeting, and where I'm traveling. Topics will vary, but themes will include adventure travel, emergent technologies, world music, venture capital, plugs for friends/products/opportunities I feel strongly about, startups, geopolitics, personal growth, and inspiring human stories.
Below is a sampling:
What I'm listening to ~
Fat Freddy's Drop. I've been listening to New Zealand's "seven-headed soul monster" for years after being introduced by a friend. Their music is genre-bending and gets me grooving&dancing every time. The band's name was inspired after, during a 48 hour LSD trip, band members wrote, mixed, and recorded the entirety of the song Hope, which was released on their first EP. Fat Freddy was the New Zealand street name for LSD, and the name stuck. You're welcome :)
What I'm reading ~
The Fish That Ate the Whale: The Life and Times of America's Banana King. This book was recommended to me at the tail end of a 5-day jaunt through Nicaragua celebrating a friend's bachelor party earlier this month. The book tells the story of the life and times of Sam Zemurray, and here's a little taste: "...The Fish That Ate the Whale unveils Zemurray as a hidden kingmaker and capitalist revolutionary, driven by an indomitable will to succeed. Known as El Amigo, the Gringo, or simply Z, the Banana Man lived one of the great untold stories of the last hundred years. Starting with nothing but a cart of freckled bananas, he built a sprawling empire of banana cowboys, mercenary soldiers, Honduran peasants, CIA agents, and American statesmen."
Thanks for reading. And just so you know, I'm a little scared to be sending these, frankly. If you're receiving this email, you're someone who's been in my life and whom I thought might enjoy receiving these notes. I will never spam you or use your information for anything other than its intended purpose. If you have more than enough emails and don't want another one, though, just hit unsubscribe at the bottom of the page.
I really appreciate you. I look forward to doing more with you in the future!
My Best,
Miles
