š¤ Miles's Notes #28
Hermanos GutiƩrrez, A Madonna Who Shows the Beauty in Going Overboard, An Important reminder
miles here. iām a curious guy and am interested in the interesting and like to curate this semi-so-often newsletter for my friends and anyone else who wants to tune in.
Itās been a while since I last wrote to you in August. 2021 has continued 2020ās theme and been a year of change, personally and professionally. A lot of that change is still under wraps, but some of you may have noticed that I launched another publication, Between the Lines, which regularly shares stories about the Claremont technology community. Thatās been an incredibly rewarding journey thus far, and Iām excited to see where it goes.
Iāve missed writing these more personal notes, and the conversations they spark with my friends around the world, though, and I hope to bring them back with some regularity in 2022.
Iām writing you from Sisters, Oregon where Iām spending the last few cozy days of the year with family, playing charades, Pictionary, watching movies, sipping cocoa, reflecting on the past year, while planning for the new one, surrounded by freshly fallen snow. How are you spending your New Year? Whatās something youāre looking forward to in 2022? Maybe just send me a photo of you lately? Iād love to hear from you.
As always, find some nuggets that Iāve been enjoying below. I hope youāre well.
Much love, Miles
š§ what iām listening to
Hermanos GutiĆ©rrez. Iām not sure how I stumbled upon these fine brothers Alejandro and Stephan, perhaps Spotify radio, but Iām grateful I did.
Their instrumental albums are soulful and transport me back to my time in remote places in Mexico. Or perhaps the always too brief, but sometimes somber cinematic moments of Miguel Ćngel FĆ©lix Gallardo as depicted by Diego Luna in Narcos: Mexico. I find the Hermanos GutiĆ©rrez albums conjure memories, imagination, and reflection. The brothers were born from an Ecuadorian mother and a Swiss father and grew up between those two cultures. Their experiences there, and in Mexican deserts, have shaped their sound. You canāt go wrong with any of their albums, Hijos Del Sol, Hoy Como Ayer, El Camino De Mi Alma, or 8 AƱos. Their latest album, Hijos Del Sol, is accompanied by an eight-minute film directed by Fernando Guisa. The black and white video has been nominated twice for the Best Music Video Award of 2020 at both the New York International Film Awards and the Barcelona Indie Filmmakers Fest. You can watch it here.
š¤ÆĀ just incredible article
A Madonna Who Shows the Beauty in Going Overboard. Youāll need to pull this up on a big screen. My dad shared this with me awhile back. Prepare to have your mind blown by a quirky painter who died almost half a millennia ago.
š¤Ā an important reminder
thanks for reading. i appreciate you.
my best,
miles
